Do you ever feel like your mood is highly affected by the weather? If so, you are definitely not alone. Many individuals report feeling negative emotions on rainy days. Some may experience feelings of sadness or even anger. Studies have in fact proven this to be quite common. Fortunately, there are some basic things you can attempt to do in order to boost your mood and possibly enjoy a little pouring rain.

Occasionally, rain is accompanied by some sunlight. Thus, opening up your curtains and letting in some natural light can help tremendously. Natural sunlight is known to make you feel happier and improve your wellbeing. Therefore, if you are surrounded by windows, it would be a good idea to open your blinds. Sunlight has been shown to increase your levels of serotonin, which leads to a more positive and uplifting mood. Even if no sun may be shining on you that day, the natural light itself will decrease your level of melatonin leaving you feeling less tired and more energized. In the presence of clouds that may be blocking any potential light from reaching you, investing in some full spectrum bulbs which mimic sunlight could be just as efficient.

Exercise is also a great tool to improve your mood, especially on a rainy and cloudy day. Proven to be as effective as antidepressants, exercise has the power to combat your negative emotions and make you feel cheerier and more positive. It may be challenging to bring yourself to go to the gym or workout at home on a gloomy and rainy day, but that is when a little push and effort from your part will go a long way. People report feeling more fulfilled, energized, productive, and happier after completing a short workout. Thus, squeezing in some time to exercise on a rainy day is highly encouraged.

Additionally, surrounding yourself with some company on rainy days can also make a tremendous difference. Rather than isolating yourself which could potentially push you into a state of negativity, hanging out with some friends is encouraged. A rainy day calls for hot chocolate and a movie, and the best way to enjoy this is with the company of others. Board games can also be a good activity if you are into that type of leisure. In fact, any type of socialization or contact on a rainy day can help combat some of the negative emotions you may be experiencing.

While sunlight is magnificent, rain can also be perceived from a positive stance. For some, the rain is quite enjoyable and allows them to partake in activities that they normally would not be inclined to engage in on a sunny day. Thus, try to find what works best for you in order to gradually switch your attitude towards the rain. It can sometimes be challenging to do this on your own. You may feel like nothing you have tried has been successful in improving your mood. If that is the case, do not be discouraged! Our psychologists and life coaches at Clinique PsySanté are here to help and assist you along the way. Whether it be some annoyance at the sight of rain, or a serious case of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), our services can greatly benefit you.
